China-Japan Conflict Intensifies

The territorial dispute in the East China Sea has taken a step up. Japan has issued orders to shoot down foreign drones in its airspace, and China has vowed war if Japan shoots down Chinese drones. The conflict is over the Senkaku Islands, or what China calls the “Diaoyu” Islands. The three barren islands have been under Japanese control since 1895. The government tells us that 1914 must be commemorated, not celebrated, and ministers worry about British triumphalism upsetting the Germans. But the debate about Germany’s responsibility for the outbreak of war in 1914 won’t go away. Historians are divided into those who blame Germany — John Rohl, Max Hastings — and those who point the finger at someone else, such as Serbia (Christopher Clarke) or Russia (Sean McMeekin) or even Britain (Niall Ferguson). The blame game is of course conceptually flawed. The international system in 1914 was seriously dysfunctional. The alternative to searching for scapegoats is to examine the system. US warships to remain off Syria coast, reports say

The US Navy is reportedly set to keep some warships off the coast of Syria, although chances of a military strike against the Arab country have grown slim. US Navy officials announced that only two of the Nimitz strike group ships will leave the Mediterranean waters in the next few weeks, while three ships will stay in the region to take action if necessary.
